House Rese is set on the mountainside slope above Gordon's bay, a house for a retired but fit and agile single, middle aged woman, that takes advantage of its distinct access opportunities presented by its position between two streets and consists of two dwellings. One for own use and one tenanted for companionship, and physical and financial security.

The design  is an exploration into the relationships of the functions of a house squeezed into a very small space.  The normal every day experience of each room in a house is a small percentage of the total use of the house. The bathroom is used 5%, morning and night, and a few minutes in between but takes up at least 10% of the floor area.  The bedroom might be used 25-35% but mostly, as a space, is not experienced because for a large part of this time one is asleep. The combined kitchen, stair living space is the most utilized for movement, leisure, eating and life-organizing functions.

Ordinarily for most of the day the least used spaces in a house, the ones with a specific function, are kept remote or disconnected from the more regularly used living spaces and so become unused, dead spaces during the most part of the daily life in the house.

The dwelling at the top of the site is a volume of 6x6x6m and within this tiny footprint, but by simply shifting the vertical and horizontal placement of the specific functions within this volume, complex spacial arrangements and possibilities of transparency are created between the main living space  and the smaller spaces, while  all the while maintaining privacy and general spacial cohesion.

Focus is given to the spaces one is 'always' in, and these spaces borrow from and expand into the other otherwise unused spaces in a plan where a space is at a premium.
